By 1794, Shawnee had grown to about 100 residents. In 1907, disputes over control of an oil well led to violence and 10 people were killed. The town's success as a regional center came from its position as the site of one of Oklahoma's most productive oil fields – starting out with 2 wells producing 3 barrels per day in 1949 – and from its importance as a transportation hub for goods and workers moving between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. However, by the 1970s Shawnee's population had dwindled to just 30 residents, many of whom live in nearby rural areas today. Today Shawnee is best known for itsghost towns designation – which is given to abandoned communities that are still inhabited but have little hope of revival due to lack of redevelopment interest or infrastructure support.
