Shawnee, Oklahoma is a small town located in the central part of the state of Oklahoma. The population was 1,565 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is one of three towns in Kiamichi County and one of four towns in Muskogee County. The other two are Choctaw City and Claremore. Shawnee was founded by Kit Carson in 1824 as a trading post on the Arkansas River. The first settler to arrive in what is now Shawnee was William Starbuck, who arrived in 1825. A year later, John Fenton moved from Illinois and built a cabin hereabouts. By 1830, there were ten settlers living hereabouts; all but Fenton had come from Kentucky or Ohio. In 1831, Jno.[1] Hennepin established himself as a trader at Shawnee while Captain Jesse James led an expedition against the Kiowa Indians near present day Tulsa. On July 25th, 1831 heading east overland fromMuskogee toward Fort Smith via the Arkansas River, he encountered hostile Indian forces numbering about 2200 men under Chief Black Warrior[2]). On July 28th James' force came within gunshot range of the enemy's village after making several successful raids on their stores and killing many warriors; however they did not submit until August 5th when Black Warrior's chief brother surrendered his position to James with 10 prisoners taken,[3]). Hennepin then continued upstream for five days before reaching Fort Smith where he reported this event to General Andrew Jackson[4]. Meanwhile back at Shawnee, William Starbuck (the pioneer) organized a rude party of fifteen men and women to journey downriver and make contact with friendly Kiowa Indians whom they thought were powerful enemies of the United States([5]), although no hostilities actually took place during these initial contacts which may have been due to misunderstandings rather than actual warfare between American traders and Native Americans). After several months exploring this area they returned home rejoicing with news that their friends among the Kiowa tribe had declined any offers for arms against Ulysses S Grant's forces occupying Wichita Falls Creek[6]). It should be noted that notwithstanding its name – Shawnee being derived from Shawneeka meaning "rivermouth" – only watercourses bordering Muskogee Co., Kansas do reach it downstream (the creek flowing through downtown Shawnee proper empties into Muskogee Co.) so trade between those two places probably never happened beyond occasional interactions along its banks/floodplains
