Shawnee is a small town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area. Shawnee is located on the Arkansas River and has a total area of 33 square miles (87 square kilometers). The first Shawnee Indian Agency was established in 1827 by General James K. Polk and his army as part of military campaign against the Osage Nation. After unsuccessfully trying to move westward from their current location near present day Tulsa, they petitioned President James K. Polk for land east of Arkansas River in what is now Muskogee County in 1828. Their application received approval and they were given 640 acres (2 km²) east of the river with permission to build a fort and start trading with white settlers. In 1830, John Morris started trading goods with Shawnee Indians under the authority of General Polk's commission as an agent for Missouri Fur Company traders travelling through that territory. In 1835, when Ulysses S. Grant became president, he appointed Morris acting superintendent of Indian Affairs for all Creek Nation lands west of Tennessee River after Chief Osage refused grazing privileges to white settlers on his land south of that river within Cherokee Nation boundaries because he claimed residual ownership over that territory following Removal from Georgia (the Creek nation had been ceded to Spain in 1796). When Grant made this decision he knew that removal would be required if Oklahoma Territory was ever created; so he also ordered Morris not to allow any further trade between Creek Indians and whites until removal could take place without violence or insult from Chiefs like Chief Moore.) Although Morris protested officially at least six times during his tenure as Superintendent – including one occasion when he throw open the doors of an agency store where traders were buying goods worth $1 million – Grant ultimately approved Removal proceedings on December 3, 1839 and all Creeks except some 2,000 warriors surrendered simultaneously at nearby Swanton’s Ford southeast of present day Tulsa while 870 more Creeks continued resistance upriver until eventually being forced out by treaty negotiations which resulted in cession by most Creeks including those who left Shawnee Agency including 350 warriors led by Tecumseh’s grandson Major Ridgely Ridgely (+500 ponies) onto large tract called “Muskogee Strip” east off Arkansas River betweenpresent-day Tulsa OK & Atoka OK The town name Shawnee was derived from Choctaw word “shaheen” meaning "big water". The first post office opened in 1889; it closed in 1908 due to heavy competition from Norman, Oklahoma which opened its first post office just north of Shawnee about 1925 according to local history books . As early as 1893 there were several mills around town producing flour for local markets; today only one remains standing still however it produces power generation products such as turbines used mostly by oil exploration companies doing business offshore across Lake Mead
