The first white people to live in what would become Shawnee arrived from Illinois in 1821 when they founded a trading post on the Arkansas River near present-day Wichita Falls, Texas. By 1830, about sixty men had settled here and built houses around an open square that became known as "The Square." In 1833, James Kossuth led a group of Missourians eastward through Kansas Territory on their way to Baghdad to overthrow Ulysses S Grant's government. They stopped at Shawnee and persuaded some local settlers to accompany them; these men founded what would become Kossuth County near Shawnee soon after their return trip across the Arkansas River. In 1840, Indian fighters led by Tecumseh attacked and destroyed several settlements along the Arkansas River near present-day Tulsa before reaching Shawnee where they burned all but eight homes before retreating into Indian Territory west of Kansas City. Thereafter most white settlement occurred along Kawatchee Creek just south of present day Tulsa where Cherokee traders had set up shop since 1795 according to one source In 1853 two groups of nine settlers each arrived from Iowa under Captained John Stephenson with orders from US President James Buchanan to establish a market for goods exported downriver from Canada via Fort Gibson until finally Clearwater Bayou could be bridged overland by early 1854 travelers discovered that this route was blocked by obstructions including rapids made possible by recent construction upstream onNAACP land now known as White Sands Missile Range

It was founded in 1881 by white settlers and named for Shawnee Micmac Indians who were killed during the American Indian Wars. The town first rose to prominence as a center of cattle drives on the Kansas-Oklahoma border. From here, ranchers exported their herds of cattle to market in North America. Shawnee also became known for its hardware store and groceries, and for its production of maize flour which was used in breadmaking and other purposes throughout much of Missouri, Texas, and eventually America. In 1907, when Muskogee County formed from parts of Tulsa County, Shawnee became part of that new county. The community continued to grow rapidly through the years; by 1930 it had reached 2,000 residents. In 1940–41 oil exploration began near Shawnee; this led to increased traffic into the community and subsequent development of businesses around the oilfield sites. By 1960 Shawne had reached 5300 residents—a population larger than any other incorporated municipality inMuskogee County save Tulsa City limits (6200). The economic fortunes of Shawnee changed dramatically after World War II when oil prices collapsed following Japan's defeat in 1945 and ensuing occupation; many post-war veterans returned home with little opportunity for self-employment or investment beyond agriculture or petty shoplifting on subsistence rations received from U.S military personnel stationed abroad at home. This vacuum created an opportunity for organized crime elements within local communities such as those associated with Koreatown gangs based out of Tulsa City limits (northwest OK) to fill the void by exploiting easy access to UAW industrial jobs offshore while robbing small businesses along I-40 corridor interior away from potential competitors who might have been able to generate additional revenue without engaging in criminal activity themselves or becoming involved with organized crime groups allied with them – types such as Chinook Gangs operating out of Tulsa City limits southwest OK).
