Afterward, many white men wanted to come to this area and start businesses. However, the Shawneese refused to sell their land because they thought it would be taken away by civilization! This fight between civilization and nature continued until 1840 when all of modern-day Oklahoma became part of Mexico after US President Polk successfully negotiated Treaty No 1 ending Mexican–American War (1846). However, due to political instability within Mexico following its declaration of independence from Spain in 1848 (a time when Mexico was still part of France), no new treaties were made regarding Indian Territory until 1861 when General Douglas MacArthur signed Treaty No 3 relinquishing all remaining Cherokee Nation lands east of Arkansas River as well as any claims on western Texas .
