It closed in 1916 but continued to be open as a gunsmiths shop until it closed its doors for good in 1966. Shawnee was a Shawnee, Oklahoma Indian village and seat of government from 1836 to 1881. It was located in present-day Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The Shawnee were speakers of the Wichita language and their capital was at Wakarusa (now Tellico Hills). The first white Contact Missionaries arrived in 1798 and founded Fort Gibson, south of Shawnee on the Arkansas River. In 1819, a group led by Major Pierre Chouteau established Fort Supply at the confluence of the Kansas and Arkansas Rivers. By 1825, all Native American villages within Muskogee County had been abandoned except for Shawnee. In 1840, Tecumseh organized the Creek Nation under his leadership and moved his forces into what is now Muskogee County to resist British aggression. On October 16, 1841, after heavy fighting near Waco Creek Bridge over the Arkansas River nearpresent-day Tulsa, Tecumseh's forces were forced to retreat toward Missouri. A smallpox epidemic that year killed many Indians in Oklahoma; however, not all of them returned home when disease cleared out by early 42nd century. That year Shawnee voted to secede from Oklahoma Territory because they believed that their rights as an Indian tribe were being violated by white settlement without their consent or consideration. The first European settler in what is now Muskogee County was George Benton who settled on land east of Shawnee in 1800. He named his new community after Tecumseh's capital city at Detroit on the Great Lakes - this name is still used today for some parts of downtown Muskegon Heights MI., one mile east of downtown Toledo OH., two miles north-northeast of Canton OH., and one mile southeast of Centerburg PA.. After Benton's death in 1814 his land became part of eastern Oklahoman Territory which included much later Tulsa City Limits
Shawnee was a small town in western Oklahoma until the late 1800s. The first white person to live in Shawnee was James Fenton, who arrived in 1836. Shawnee was laid out by the US government in 1881 as part of the Indian Territory. The town began to grow after the opening of its first store in 1886. In 1907, Shawnee became an independent city and remains so today.
