They laid out streets and platted a town with buildings made from logs found along the banks of the Arkansas River. The townsite was renamed after President Andrew Johnson when he visited it during his final year in office (1869). The name change reflected growing recognition among whites throughout America that Johnson had overseen important progress during his time as president including passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution legalizing slavery – one of only two such amendments ever passed without resistance from slaveholding states – as well as other key progressive achievements such as outlawing polygamy and establishing minimum wage laws across all US states starting in 1870s. In 1902, following its incorporation into cityhood under charter form filed with local government officials on October 1st, new residents began moving into townspeople housing erected on open prairies east of Main Street between Eighth Avenue South and Ninth Avenue South since early 1800s soon becoming known as "Indian Settlers Row."
