Despite this decline some aspects of traditional life remain strong like dances that are still performed at night along with potlatches (a type of Chiefs' meeting).

In 1916, the United States Congress passed the Indian Reorganization Act which renamed all of the reservations in Oklahoma into tribes and made Shawnee an individual reservation. The first chief of Shawnee was Major George Armstrong Custer who died in 1873 before he could take over his tribe's leadership role. There were many other chiefs from different tribes that lived in and around Shawnee at various times but they all eventually left to join other tribes or die from disease or conflict with white settlers. In 1951, the United States government leased land to Wichita State University which would become part of Wichita State University Park today. At first, there were no buildings on this campus but later on, courses were given onsite at nearby businesses like Paintsville Post Office and K-Mart while students lived off-campus at various hotels near campus. Today, Shawnee is still home to a few hundred people and it is one of the most rural towns in Oklahoma with only three miles radius from downtown Tulsa!
Shawnee was the first permanent Shawnee Indian Village and is now the Shawnee National Historical Park. The village was founded in 1827 by Chief Tecumseh, upon his return from England after a successful campaign against British forces. Tecumseh's group of Shawnees settled in what is now Shawnee County, Oklahoma, and developed a thriving trade economy that spanned much of central and eastern Kansas. In 1834, the United States military burned down theVillage to drive out its inhabitants; this event is widely considered to be one of the most shameful episodes in American history.
