The name Shawnee comes from the Wichita language word "sha-nee" meaning "place where red ants live." The first Shawnee people were probably hunters and gatherers who lived along the edge of present-day Muskogee County and Cherokee County before they began to settle there in around 1700 AD. The first permanent Shawnee settlement was located in what is now Muskogee County about 1750 AD. The Shawnees were originally allied with the Creek nation but eventually became their enemies because they objected to some of Creek's religious beliefs, including polygamy. In 1806, however, Chief Tecumseh led an attack against Creek forces that resulted in a series of battle successes which helped reopen peace talks between America's two major nations This event also made Tecumseh popular among other chiefs within Indian Territory as he showed great strength during these conflicts without fighting back or taking advantage of his enemies' weaknesses. In 1807, after years of consultation with various tribal leaders, Congress approved a treaty ceding all land eastward Of Arkansas River to the Cherokees in order to open up new territory for American settlers This treaty allowed white settlers access to much of Indian Territory west of Arkansas River which had been forbidden under previous treaties When President James Ketchum issued Executive Order 8802 on December 20th, 1907 ordering all Native Americans living east of Kansas state line into Arizona by January 1st 1908, many native tribes along with their families began moving westward into what is now Oklahoma The official end to this forced migration came when Indian Territory was reorganized as Oklahoma Statehood on November 16th 1907 .
