Shawnee, Oklahoma is located in the eastern part of the United States. It is bordered by Kansas to the north and west, and Texas to the south. Grant's Expedition overran and burned down an encampment of Shawnee Chief Tecumseh's band led by Major John Custer that had been resting foraging along the creek. In 1840, Congress passed an act creating a new Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma; this territory included all of present-day Oklahoma except for part of Shawneetown County located east of Tulsa within Tulsa County boundaries). In1841, President James K. Polk transferred 1 million acres (4 square miles) of land eastward from Texas into Indian Territory; this area included much of what is now Tulsa County and parts of Osage and Broken Arrow counties in eastern Kansas
