Following this victory, President Andrew Johnson called for Indian Removal Act which led to large-scale migration by Cherokee and Seminole from eastern South Carolina and Georgia to Oklahoma Territory in order to find new homes. This influx of new people changed not only Tulsa’s demographics but also its economy as businesses grew rapidly during this time period. According to the 2010 census, there are 10,839 people living in Shawnee Township: 8,236 households and 468 families residing within township boundaries; and 1 non-residing family that lives outside of township boundaries. The racial makeup of township residents was 86% white (non-Hispanic), 12% black or African American, 0% Native American/Alaska Native, 3% Asian/Pacific Islander, 2% from other races, and 1% two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 5% of all township residents.

They also traded with other cultures including those along the Mississippi River. In 1827, after years of conflict with the United States government over Indian land claims and treaties, the Shawnees surrendered all their holdings to Washington Territory. The post was abandoned in 1830 when gold seekers discovered it.
