Shawnee is a small community in northwestern Oklahoma. It is located on the Cimarron River, about 20 miles east of the city of Tulsa. The population was 1,951 at the 2000 census and 2,055 as of 2010. Shawnee is part of the Tulsa-led metropolitan area. The name Shawnee comes from several sources: one source says it is derived from Cherokee words meaning "place where wild horses do their grazing," while another source claims that it derives from Choctaw word 'shaheen' meaning "to drink." The first recorded mention of Shawnee was in 1831 when Captain James K. Polk directed his forces to attack a band of Indians who had crossed the Cimarron River near present-day Shawnee. The first town in what would become Shawnee was founded by settlers named Griggs in 1838. At that time, there were only two settlements in this area - Coal Creek and Holcomb City - and most people traveled to Jackson or Topeka for goods and services. By 1840, some 40 residents lived in Griggsville; however, by 1849, only six remained because coal mining became very difficult to operate during the early 1800s due to being surrounded by grassy banks and hillsides covered with limestone bedrock. In 1851, General Zachary Taylor ordered Major Frank Wagoner to establish a military post at what would later become known as Fort Gibson – today’s Guthrie – because he believed that Native Americans living near Arkansas could be used as leverage against Mexico should war break out between those nations over control of Texas (the Mexican state bordered on Indian territory). In response to this order, local farmer John Pemberton organized a group of 10 men called the Wichita Commission which purchased land southeast of what would become Shawnee for $5 per acre (this amount increased over time because Purchase No. 6 donation included parcels totaling 2 square miles). This purchase allowed Pemberton and his men easy access to water supplies necessary for their farming endeavors while also providing them with security from possible Indian raids northward into Kansas Territory (which then comprised much more than just Oklahoma). 1) The first permanent settler at present day ShawnEE was John Pemberton who arrived here from Kan., Sept.,1838 & soon started building houses: lots amounted now unto 400 acres.—Ft Gibson Post Sept.–1851

In 1907, Shawnee changed its name to Tulsa after city officials recommended it for this new moniker based on its proximity to Tulsa City Hall and other important municipal facilities. The name stuck around for several years before being replaced by Tulsa proper in 1915 following the merger of Tulsa County with Oklahoman County. Today, Shawnee remains an important community with a population of around 350 residents; it is home to several businesses including KFC, Sprint Nextel, Home Depot and Sears). The economic development of Shawnee has been hampered by changes in federal policy which have hurtcommerce within the area due to regulations related to waste reduction and energy efficiency initiatives instituted by then-President George W Bush's administration during his time in office (2006-2009). However, recent investment rounds from private equity firms have helped start some businesses back up again in ShawnEE.
