Sapulpa, Oklahoma is a town located in southeastern Oklahoma. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee County, Oklahoma Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in Sapulpa were the Kiowa and Comanche people who built their villages on small Upton Creek near present-day Sapulpa. In 1887, W. H. Barnes, an American Fur trader, founded the town of Muskogee in what is now Muskogee County on land that he had acquired from the Kiowa and Comanche people. The townsite was named for John Braidwood, an employee of Barnes when he founded the town. In 1907, Sapulpa became a city and was Ziegler Field Airport opened by Major General James A. Garfield within its limits as part of Army Air Forces World War II military installation projects during the war years. The airport served many purposes including storage for military equipment and also housed two Boeing P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft which were used for photographic surveys over central Oklahoma during World War II; one being stored at runway 16L while another was stored at runway 04R which later became 4L/24R after it was added to I-35W interchange between US 60 and Loop 24A in 1966). After World War II ended in 1945, Ziegler Field closed and most aviation activities stopped at the airport except for local use until 1997 when it reopened as an International Airport serving Sapulpa with general aviation facilities only although some light commercial traffic still uses it today.. On November 15th 1962 a tornado touched down near mile marker 12 on US 61 just east of downtown Sapulpa killing 3 people (2 women driving cars & 1 man) & injuring over 100 others before dissipating about 5 miles southeast of town center destroying homes, businesses & agriculture buildings leaving behind vast amounts of damage including crop destruction valued at $250 million dollars or more making it one of deadliest tornadoes in United States history according to some reports however other sources say this figure may be too high considering that many communities across much of rural America were without power following supercell storms that swept through much eastern OKLAHOMA on October 25 – 30th 1960 resulting in totals up to $30 million dollars damage or more throughout most areas.. Sapulpa has experienced many changes since its incorporation into Tulsa County as a city in 1907 including several waves of growth over time due to various factors such as oil production which began moving westward intoMuskogee County starting around 1911 followed by new manufacturing jobs coming online during WWII which stimulated economic development culminating with heavy industry moving out towards Interstate 35W approaching downtown Tulsa beginning around 1970 bringing tens if not hundreds if not thousands more jobs/residential housing units etc., automobile sales peaked around 1975 but have slowly declined ever since peaking again ~1995-2000 then steadily declining each year thereafter; this has resulted in numerous vacant storefronts along Main Street since 2007 taken advantage by developers who are looking for potential real estate investment properties outside citylimits because there is no future industrial or commercial development available within city limits anymore? Nevertheless there are scattered pockets throughout downtown where businesses remain open despite significant property loss due to redevelopment efforts initiated by community groups such as Downtown Business Improvement District (DBID), Preservation League Of Tulsa Incorporated (PLOT), volunteer firefighter department #816 and others working collectively toward creating mixed use districts beneath old warehouse district known locally as "Downtown Now" which would include business districts adjacent to existing residential neighborhoods providing affordable housing options within walking distance /shopping centers adjacent thereto etc.; these efforts have yielded mixed results so far with some areas seeing increased activity while others see little or no progress beyondPhase 2 experimental developments having been developed sporadically along Main Street opposite DBID headquarters dating back to 2009-2013 primarilyCommercial - containing large office spaces leased out long term typically exceeding 10 years but gradually becoming less frequent & fewer amenities evident than Phase 1 residential -containing smaller office spaces leased out shorter term typically less than 6 months generally lacking any signage indicating whether they are longterm leases or not; these types of developments often generate negative feedback from neighbors because they provide few amenities compared to traditional apartment complexes& lack accessorial services typically associated with larger urban area suburban surroundings]
