In the 1920s, the factory was closed down and the plants were dismantled. Today, there are only a few fragments of these plants left in Sapulpa. Pepper spray demonstrations began in Sapulpa in 1915. In 1916, an ordinance was passed that prohibited public use of pepper spray. However, this ordinance did not take effect until 1918. At that time, it was discovered that tear gas could be used as a substitute for pepper spray and this became popular among police officers. In 1926, the first production line for pepper spray was built in Sapulpa. It produced 1 million cans of pepper Spray per year. By 1938, the number of employees had increased to over 100 people and production continued to increase until World War II when it stopped due to budget cuts. During World War II, many people were employed at the plant who produced pepper spray for military service purposes such as pilots and artillerymen. After the war ended, most of these employees returned home but a small number continued working at the plant until its closure in 1962). The last employee at the old factory worked on developing new ways to make less toxic Mace which is still being used today by law enforcement agencies around the world
