Sapulpa, Oklahoma is a small town located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County and the only incorporated town in the county. Sapulpa is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded by settlers who came from eastern Kansas in 1887. In 1907, Sapulpa became one of two towns in Muskogee County when it was split off from Decatur County. The first post office opened in Sapulpa on July 5, 1907. About a mile north of the current downtown business district, there was a Methodist church which functioned as a meeting place for local farmers and ranchers until it burned down in 1923. A new Methodist church was built on what is now Main Street in 1922 and it served as the center of civic life for Sapulpa until its own incorporation as an independent municipality in 1955. In 1957, Sapulpa became home to Tulsa Air Force Base which later became known as Tinker Air Force Base after General James Hays Tinker (1899-1968). After World War II ended, many service members left Tulsa for posts overseas and many businesses closed along with them; however, some reopened and continued to thrive thanks to veteran support programs such as Veteran's Day Parade Committee and sapuluspasfoundation@gmail.com whose mission is "to ensure that every sapuluspas community has access to quality education opportunities]." Sapulpa, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by George and Jennie Seaton. The Seaton family had come to the area from Illinois. In 1907, Sapulpa was a small town of about 100 people. It was named for the sapling tree that growed near the town's center. The Seattons built a log cabin on their ranch and started a small grocery store. They also raised cattle and hogs. In 1914, they built a larger cabin and opened a post office. In 1916, they bought land around what is now Sapulpa High School and started to build homes. By 1918, the Seatons had built over 30 homes in Sapulpa. They also began to sell farm products and eggs from their home garage. In 1930, they sold their business to J & L Neely who ran it until 1984 when it was purchased by Monte Cooks Incorporated which still operates it today as a grocery store
