Sapulpa is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 939 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Sapulpa was established on December 8, 1896. The town was platted by John L. Walls and James K. White. Wall's father had come to the area from Illinois in 1885, and he started an oil well near present-day Sapulpa in 1889. In 1905, the Watkins brothers organized a company to take over the well site and built a pipeline to bring crude oil from Texas to market in Sapulpa. The townspeople built their first buildings around 1907 or 1908. They named their first store "Oklahoma House" because they did not yet have a post office name for the town center (the OK sign still stands). The first school in Sapulpa was opened on January 1, 1909 by Mrs. Jennie Sells with 25 students enrolled; it closed six months later because of lack of money to keep it open. In 1911, Sapulpa became part of Tulsa County when that county was created from parts of Muskogee and Tulsa counties. The new county seat was set at Jenks until 1912 when Tulsa City set up its own government there and Jenks returned as the county seat; it remained so until 1907 when Oklahoma Statehood made Mud Springs the new county seat (Mud Springs had been established as a small settlement east of present-day Sapulpa). The city of Sapulpa was founded in 1907 by settlers from the eastern United States. The city name is derived from the Choctaw word "sapi" meaning "hill". In 1915, Sapulpa became a Chickasaw Nation reserve. In 1926, the Chickasaw Nation ceded Sapulpa to the United States as part of a treaty settlement. In 1927, Sapulpa's first post office opened. The City of Sapulpa was incorporated on December 12, 1928. On November 5, 1930, the United States Postal Service moved its headquarters from Topeka, Kansas to Sapulpa. Sapulpa experienced significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location as a military airfield and naval base for the US Navy and Army Air Forces. The city hosted large aircraft manufacturing plants operated by Boeing and Lockheed Aircraft Corporation during World War II. The war ended with Japan's surrender in 1945 and no new hostilities erupted between the two nations. After the war ended, Boeing resumed production at their Wichita plant while Lockheed continued operations at their Oklahoma City plant until 1960. During this time period, other major businesses established themselves in Sapulpa including construction company Matson-Litton Paper Co., insurance agency Farmers Mutual Insurance Company (FMIC), grocery store Shaw's Food Stores (now known as Kroger), post office Gibson Post Office (later MidAmerica Radio Communications Inc.), Dollar General department store First National Bank (now JCPenney) and several thousand individual households attached to small businesses that mushroomed during wartime boom times. These businesses continued until after World War II when larger companies took over most of what had been developed in downtown Sapulapa - leaving little or no development left standing after more than 50 years of continuous economic growth within one municipally-owned community!
