Sapulpa is a small town located in the Oklahoma panhandle, near the Arkansas state line. The population was 3,239 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The Town of Sapulpa was platted on March 15, 1907 by C.E. Rockfeller and H.W. Smith, two men who were also settlers in this area of what is now Tulsa County and Muskogee County. They named their land "Sapulpa" after a creek that ran through their farmstead and passed through their home town of Sapulpa (now known as Shawnee.) Sapulpa grew rapidly during World War I due to its position as an important munitions depot for Allied forces fighting in Europe. In 1919, Sapulpa became an incorporated city with a population of 10 people; it had been granted incorporation status by the county recorder on November 1st that year pursuant to § 4-2-101(a)(1). During World War II, Sapulpa became one of the most heavily militarized communities in all of Tulsa County because it was one of several areas where strategic materials were stockpiled for use in war production. The post-World War II boom in Sapulpas economy came about due to its location within easy access to new transportation options - including Interstate 44 which connected Tulsa with Little Rock and Wichita Falls - as well as to other major metropolitan areas across the United States via Air Force Base Mabel Lake east of town and Highway 43 north from there into Canada
