Sapulpa is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. It is the seat of Stephens County government and the only village in the county. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. Sapulpa is part of the Shawnee Nation and is located on the Arkansas River. The first people to settled in this area were French Canadians who came from Quebec in 1765. They arrived by boat and then walked overland to what is now Sapulpa. The French name for this spot was "Cote d'Iberville". In 1819, two men named John Ewing and James Fenton traveled downriver from Canada and discovered a site that would become Sapulpa. They called it "Ewing's Ferry", after John Ewing's father-in-law, David Fenton. In 1892, Jules Broussard patented land around what would become Sapulpa Creek which led to its present name of Sapulpa. He also developed some wells thereabouts which helped start the lumber industry in Sapulpa. By 1915, there were 10 businesses in town with a total payroll of $2 million dollars! The post office opened in 1916,sacrificing much time for mail delivery; however, it closed about 1970 because of budget cuts by then Mayor Don Armstrong (a Democrat). In 1932 local resident Ollie Hargrave founded an airmail service between Tulsa and Sapulpa using surplus Army pilots flying DC-3s out of Fort Worth Lackland Air Force Base; however ground transport was needed so passengers had to be unloaded onto trucks or wagons before being transported into town by horseback or buggy back to their cars parked near Main Street intersections where they could pick up bags or packages dropped off at their doorsteps as they left town for home again each day! A new Post Office building was completed on Main Street downtown circa 1935 but due to fire damage December 1938another new Post Office facility (the current one)was constructed on High School property adjacenttothe original building when Progress Energy Company erected an electric generating plant thereabout during World War IIThisnewPostOffice facilitystands today as one of four oldest extant public buildings in Stephens County

Sapulpa is a small city on I-40 east of McAlester and within Muskogee County. It lies on the banks of the Arkansas River and was founded by pioneers in 1885 as a post office named Forneyville after C.F. Forney, an early settler in that area. The town became a community when oil wells were drilled nearby in 1903 and production began that year. The first store opened in 1905 and by 1907 there were six businesses in Sapulpa with a population of about 100 people. By 1910 there were twelve businesses with a total population of over 1,200 people. In 1915 two new hotels were built: one called Frontier Hotel and another known as Cheyenne Hotel which still stands today beside I-40 near downtown Sapulpa). In 1916 oil production stopped due to World War I but resumed after hostilities ended; it continued until 1942 when it was discontinued because of gas warfare between America and Japan during World War II Arapaho Indians who had gathered around the wells used their fire power to destroy Japanese installations so no more oil could be produced There are several remains of Japanese buildings still standing today including one completed as an apartment complex; this building also has markings from air raids during World War II which destroyed much property near Sapulpa A post office named Forneyville was renamed Sapulpa in 1912 for PhebeForney, wife of Noble Wagoner (a pioneer) co-founder of Wichita Falls Texas railroad company which served as transportation for settlers moving into what is now Muskogee County The first school opened at Chapin Schoolhouse on July 5th 1912 under teacher Mrs Fenton . The first students were taught by Miss Haney . In 1914 Chapin Schoolhouse burned down leaving only four desks connected to teach 30 students public schools did not exist then ; three girls attended Mrs Ladd’s home until 1922 when she moved to Tulsa In 1926 construction began on “The Gables” hotel which seated 300 people inside and out door facing I-40 outside With its big porch across from downtown you could see all around town What became known as “The Gables” became one of largest gathering places for Muskogee County residents before it burned down in 1951 while being used as an arena for dances by high school student body
