Sapulpa, Oklahoma is a small town in Owasso County, Oklahoma, and is the seat of the Owasso County government. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1907 by John H. Brown and his family. Sapulpa is located on the east bank of the Canadian River, about north of its confluence with the Arkansas River. The town became a center for agriculture because of its location along the river and its access to irrigation water. The town's first post office was established in 1907. The town name comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where there are many buffalo." One of Sapulpa's early businesses was a grocery store that operated from 1912 to 1915. In 1916, sapulpa Connection Railroad opened a line to Sapulpa from Tulsa and other towns in eastern Oklahoma Territory. This made Sapulpa one of the first towns in western Oklahoma to have access to railroad transportation. In 1925, General Motors began production at their main factory in Jenks, OK, which helped fuel growth in Sapulpa during this time period. The headquarters for GM until 1959 were located here at what is now known as Site A on FM 4762 (formerly State Route 6). After World War II ended, many manufacturing jobs left SapULPA due to low-cost labor available overseas; however some new businesses sprang up including a medical clinic and an auto parts store which remain open today as part of Shopko Incorporated.. As more people moved into central Oklahoma after World War II through economic development programs like Interstate Highway 40 (I-40), they brought their families with them; thus increasing population density within central Owasso County by 50%. In 1966, construction started on I-40 through Owasso County - making it possible for more people and goods to move around without having to go through central Owasso County again or take buses or cars back home! In 1970s automobiles became popular here due to cheap oil prices; however over time air quality has become an issue because nearby cities have been developing rapidly while SapULPA has not kept up with these changes
