In 1907, Sapulpa became known as a shipping point for oil production on the Arkansas River due to its location at that time along that route. The name "Sapulpa" is from the Choctaw word "sapa," meaning "a small stream." Sapulpa was founded in 1887 byodus Lipman and his family as a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer during World War I when he stopped there on his way to Japan. In 1922, Sapulpa was renamed after Lieutenant Colonel James Hance of the 106th Infantry Regiment (known as Custer's Cavalry). In 1928, Sapulpw became an independent city and remained that way until 1907 when it merged with Muskogee County to become one municipality under the jurisdiction of both counties. The first post office in Sapulpa was established in 1887; it closed in 1902 due to financial problems caused by Indian hostilities against white settlers. The first store built in Sapulpa was operated by A.D. White & Son on Main Street between 1909 and 1912; it continued to be open until 1913 when it burned down following a fire at the store owned by Wm Fenton & Bros.; this event marked the end of retail business in what would become known as downtown Sappula.) A new store opened on Third Street south of First Avenue around 1915 and continued operations until 1926; this Store also became known asthe old depot which still stands today across from First Methodist Church off North First street.).
