Sapulpa is a town in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to arrive in Sapulpa were the Kiowa and Comanche Indians. They built their homes on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1868, settlers named Fayetteville came to Sapulpa from Van Buren County, Arkansas. The first post office was established in 1869 and it was called Prairie du Chien because that is where they found a plant called prairie corn which gave them their name for the place. In 1872, Sapulpa had a school and four churches; all serving Indian nations who lived there at that time. In 1907, fire destroyed most of downtown Sapulpa causing many businesses to close for several years until reconstruction began which included new buildings and a store front on Red Eagle Creek Road. A water tower also became operational during this time providing drinking water for Sapulpa and its surrounding areas until 1984 when an electric generation facility replaced the old one In 1959-1960, construction began on what would become known as "The Ark," now known as The Plaza Shopping Center which served as an entertainment complex for locals and visitors alike before becoming home to Tapology nightclub in 2013 The town started off small with only twelve residents when it was platted in 1907 by developer Wm Hennepin Barnes Jr.. Over time however, growth continued apace with new housing developments being built along Red Eagle Creek Road while other businesses opened up such as a barbershop and grocery store soon after In 1960-1961 local contractor Don Schuler designed and constructed what may have been Tulsa’s first glass-enclosed shopping mall complete with artificial turf fields outside complete with markets (the still extant Ellington Market has since been demolished). This development ushered in an era of fashion retailing within city limits while also promoting tourism by hosting international shows such as Elvis Presley's comeback show at Fairgrounds Stadium just north of town back then By 1980 total population reached two thousand five hundred ninety nine with nearly every type of business represented including restaurants/cafeterias/bars/nightclubs/shops/warehouses etc… With globalization taking hold ever increasing numbers fled central Oklahoma thirsty forHSM opportunities so much so that Businessman Don Schuler went into voluntary retirement due to family pressure just prior to his death leaving behind what is now known as "The Schuler Company" empire propelling sapula onto high levels both commercially & socially
Sapulpa, Oklahoma was founded in the 1840s by the Chisholm Settlers. The town grew up around a mill that ground corn and wheat. In 1868, Sapulpa became the seat of government for Cherokee County when it was organized from parts of Muskogee and Osage Counties. In 1907, Sapulpa was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer during his visit to the area. The city experienced growth in the 1920s when it became an important center for cattle farming and mining. During World War II, Sapulpa served as a base for military operations in central Oklahoma. After the war, the city experienced declines in population and economicactivity until recent years when it has seen slight growth with new development coming to town
