By 1885, the community had become known as "The Hub" because of its location as the center of an oilfield that had been discovered just east of town. In 1907, Sand Springs became a city when it merged with neighboring Catoosa. After World War II, industry dwindled and sandmining and other mining activities resumed in nearby Blackwell Hills and around Sand Springs proper; however, these operations were short-lived due to depletion of underground resources and competition from more efficient production facilities elsewhere in Clay County. The last mine closed down in 1984 after producing for only 17 years. In recent years, development has begun again around thetown center which includes many new businesses and residences; however, some residents remain cautiously optimistic about potential future growth opportunities for their hometown since progress has been slow on most fronts relative to other major cities within Tulsa metropolitan area Sand Springs also offers a wide variety of cultural attractions including two museums -the OSU Museum of Art (opened in 2004)andthe OU Museum of Anthropology (opened in 2007).
