Sand Springs, Oklahoma is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 11,653 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1907 as a small town on the banks of the Arkansas River. It became an important center for cattle and cotton production during the 19th century. The area now known as Sand Springs was first inhabited by the Kickapoo and Kiowa peoples. In 1828, Major James Ketchum located what is now Sand Springs on land that he had purchased from the Kiowa people. It is said that Ketchum named his new settlement after his nativeland, Spain's Valencia del Oro Province in southwestern Mexico. By 1873, when Tulsa was founded nearby on the Arkansas River, many Spanish-American immigrants had arrived in Muskogee County to seek their fortune in what would become one of America's most prosperous regions. After Tulsa grew into a large town with its own railroad system and other amenities, Sand Springs declined within decades due to factors such as economic decline and engineering advances which destroyed some of its major industries including cotton ginning and lumbering.
