Sand Springs is an unincorporated community in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It lies at the junction of U.S. Highway 287 and Canadian Road 291. The first post office in Sand Springs was established on July 15, 1907, and served until it was discontinued on November 30, 1908. The name "Sand Springs" is from the Kiowa word "sand". A post office called "Bedford" was established in 1909, and served until 1911; it was located along Canadian Road 291 north of present-day Sand Springs. A store built by John Sayers in 1912 became a landmark in town. In 1913 construction began on a school which would serve as the nucleus for what would become Sand Springs High School. Mrs. Jordon donated land to build the school which opened its doors on September 10th 1915 In 1922 the postoffice changed its name to "Sand Springs", after Oklahoman Judge Ephraim Bemis Jr.. The first residents of what is now known as Sand Springs were George Custer and his family who had come from Defiance County just prior to World War I; they soon followed with other families including those of Roosevelt Gentry who arrived during World War II; Harry Hays who moved into town in 1946 after relocating from Tulsa; Mrs. Nellie Hays who came following her husband's death in a plane crash over Arkansas; Earnest Bassett (1902-1984) who started a farm near town; Roy Witherspoon (born 1930) who ran a seed store next door to First National Bank before moving his business into what is now known as Walmart across US Highway 287 while still living in town; David Webber (born 1951) currently runs adjacent businesses including Webre's Grill & Brewery sandwich shop - one of only two such places left withinOklahoma City limits- along Canadian Road 291 east of current day Sand Spring
