Sand Springs, Oklahoma is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 13,812 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Muskogee County after Tulsa and the fifteenth most populous city in Oklahoma. The city was founded in 1881 by settlers from central Canada. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907 and a full-time seat of government in 1959. The name "Sand Springs" comes from sandstone that once lay near the current town site. A post office called Sand Springs was established at this location on October 26, 1881, and remained open until February 14, 1893. The first settler to arrive in Sand Springs was John Crouse of Vermont. He built a cabin on the present site of downtown on July 20, 1882. In 1907, the City of Muskogee incorporation occurred withDrury Fenton as Mayor. On November 3rd passage of an ordinance creating municipal boundaries within Muskogee County followed by its first election gave us our present form - thirteen cities amalgamated into one compact place - with our new City Hall located just east of Third Street between Elm and Taylor Streets (now part of what is known as Historic District No 2). It should be noted that prior to 1959 all but two (and possibly three) outlying villages were annexed into the City limits without any vote or referendum; indeed these annexations are generally considered to have been illegal under state law at that time! In fact annexation requests which came before then were typically refused because there simply wasn't enough territory to include! The only exception being Butler Creek which reverted back to Indian Territory following World War II when it was ceded to Oklahoma by Japan as part of their surrender agreement! All other village incorporations followed suit over ensuing years including those for Beech Grove Heights (1910), Pampa (1911), Haskell (1913), Eagleville (1915), Springdale (1920), Garden Valley( 1922) and finally Durant/Muskogee Heights annexationrequested by Wichita Fallsirted around for several years until finally given approval by the City Council on December 5th 1926; however no vote ever took place! This particular request may have been prompted by plans being developed for a shopping center adjacent to Wichita Falls Airport which would have resulted in more than double the number of people living withinmuskoge county limits!! Needless to say this never happened... sorry Wichita Falls residents! On July 1st 1909 officers from both Tulsa and McAlester arrived at townsite bringing with them much needed supplies for what would become known as “The Great Migration” - folks looking for land amid very difficult times during America's Dust Bowl Era Ofreally Hard Times!. Just prior thereto many teams had started arriving daily at what would become known as “The Depot” ferrying goods over Mud River To marketeers & traders who stored away food & equipment necessaryfor day jobters alike along 4 main streets now know collectivelyas Main Street & Business Avenue !! What began life as a small stop on railroad tracks soon morphed into today’s largest commercial plaza west Of Tulsa!!! Our diverse cultural roots are also evident today thru such institutions as First United Methodist Church located across from State Capitol building (& played hostessssince 1915 w/Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra!), Center For Creative Artsancerly termedtheArtHouse& numerous cultural events sponsored annuallyby various organizations affiliated w/the arts INCLUDING THE EVERGREEN MUSIC FESTIVAL held every spring inside fairgrounds!!!! There are also numerous galleries available year-round showcasing local artists work!!!!! Lastly we must not forget about our fine citizens who provide essential services such as firefighting efforts、police patrols etc....... even putting upwith considerable traffic congestion sometimes resultingin frustration !!
