Sand Springs is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Haskell County after Jenks. Sand Springs is located on the Arkansas River and includes parts of the towns of Jenks and Springdale. The first permanent European settlers were French Canadians who arrived in 1769 and established a trading post near what is now downtown Sand Springs. In 1868, when Haskell County was organized, it included part of present-day Sand Springs; however, most of the town's growth took place from 1886 to 1907 when the railroad arrived and began serving as its major employer. The engine shops and other associated industries that developed here produced some of America's earliest metal products such as rails and track components. In 1911, when Oklahoma became a state, Sand Springs became its seat with its current location becoming official on December 15th following a special election held to select an alternative site for the county courthouse complex because Jenks had been chosen as its new capital by then-Governor John Horton Stephens. At that time, Jenks consisted of only about 1000 residents while Sand Springs had a population of 10,000+. During World War II (1939–1945), many American soldiers served in Japan as military personnel or civilians living in ROK territory adjacent to Japan; among these were several members of the army’s 476th Infantry Regiment who lived in what would become known as "The Camp" within Sand Springs until their demobilization back home in 1946: Lt Colonel Harry Sauter (USArmy) – KFCWA Radio personality "Harry Sauter's Army", Warrant Officer First Class Homer Crouse (USN) – owner/operator/manager/owner/operator/employee - State Fairgrounds food concessionaire / truck driver for US Forces Japanese Americans Internment camp operated by UJAFE during World War II; Sergeant First Class Lewis Hogg (USMC) – Specialty Intelligence officer attached to regiment during war; Private First Class Clarence Sheppard (PFC) – Company Quartermaster sergeant with 3rd Battalion 507th Infantry Regiment assigned mainly to garrison duty at Camp Hansen located on White Sands Missile Range just outside city limits; Captain John Fenton (USMILICOM) Commander Task Force 82 led by Lieutenant General Courtney Hodges which liberated Yokohama from Imperial Japanese forces on April 9 1945 - all are buried at Arlington National Cemetery nearby including Major General Curtis LeMay - USAF pilot shot down over Hiroshima on July 6 1945 killing all crewmembers aboard his aircraft - all are also buried there including Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz - US Navy admiral who headed Maritime Expeditionary Force during Pacific Campaign 1942-1943 & later Commanding General Amphibious Assault Force at Okinawa campaign 1944-1945 & Commander Naval Air Wing Twenty Eight which flew combat missions against Japanese forces over Solomon Islands during early years of Korean War

According to 2008 reports from Forbes Magazine, Sand Springs ranks as one of America's 100 fastest-growing towns according to its ranking system which weighs economic indicators such as joblessness rates and real estate values against community needs like public transportation access or access to quality education. The history of Sand Springs goes back many years before it became known as "Sand Springs." At various points during its early life, the town site included parts of what are now Haskell and Osage counties. For much of its history (dating back at least to 1881), there were no permanent residents or businesses here - only Indians who camped along riverbanks throughout winter months when water ran low. When Kansas City experienced rapid growth following World War II – aided by federal largesse – Easterners began moving into what had been an isolated ranching community. By 1970, however, more than 50% of all households in Haskell County lived within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown KC; by 2000 this percentage had increased to nearly 75%. In 1977–1978 work began on building OK State University's new campus at what is currently Cummings Park near present day Jewish Boulevard and Sheridan Road within town limits; that effort culminated with completion 25 years later (September 24th). In 2001–2002 construction began on enlarging First United Methodist Church & school annex next door which would become home to both OK State University's main campus library complex as well as numerous other local businesses including two pizza places! Today that area also contains additional retailers/services such as Grocery Outlet #2 & Subway sandwich shop adjacent thereto; finallyOK State University has created several acres eastward along Sheridan Road between First United Methodist Church & adjoining housing developments known collectively hereinforth simply as "The Campus".
