The first humans to live in what is now Sand Springs were Native American hunters and gatherers who roamed the area for food and shelter during the late Pleistocene epoch. In 1867, gold was discovered nearby and led to large scale settlement by early pioneers. The town began as a small cattle ranching community with single-family housing and limited commercial activity until after World War II when it became an agricultural center responsible for production of corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, peanuts, sweet potatoes and other agricultural products. In recent years Sand Springs has experienced steady growth as a bedroom community for larger towns in its surrounding rural area which has opened up new businesses downtown while preserving much of its historical character. Sand Springs is located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The post office was established at Sand Springs on October 10, 1881, and the town was platted on December 1, 1881. Marshall delivered an Address to the people of Sand Springs in which he praised the town for its "gallantry" during World War II and announced that there would be no more bombardments of Hiroshima or Nagasaki because Japan had surrendered. The original downtown area is now part of the city of Muskogee. A new downtown area was built between 1984 and 1990 when it became apparent that portions of the old downtown were becoming too dilapidated for economic development. In 2001 a new library building was completed adjacent to Center Street in what has been called the "modern day capitol." The economy of Sand Springs has been based largely on agriculture since its establishment in 1881; however, over time manufacturing and other businesses have become more important with increased competition from neighboring cities such as Tulsa and McAlester. Manufacturing companies have included: Pabst Brewing Company (1925-1986), JBL Rubber Co., Alex Trimble Clothing Factory (1888-1993), UGL Grain Mill (1914-2006), Owens Corning Glass Works (1912-2005) and Coca Cola Bottling plants (1945-2009). In 1892, the town of Sand Springs was founded on a small military post in what is now western Oklahoma. The post was named after General James Wilkinson, who helped lead American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1907, the post became an important center for oil production in western Oklahoma. In 1912, Sand Springs became an incorporated city and remains so today.
