Sand Springs, Oklahoma is a small town in the east-central part of the United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County. The first European to visit Sand Springs was Captain James Cook in 1778. He and his crew sailed up the Arkansas River and visited Fort Worth before sailing downriver to Wichita Falls in Texas. In 1827, General John Custer fought his last battle at Buffalo Gap outside present-day Oklahoma City. Legend has it that Custer's horse was killed by a Sioux Indian warrior who then scalped its body; this eventTheme Park ride commemorates this story. Oil exploration began in 1908 in what is now Haskell County when ranchers leased land from millionaire Edwin Homan for $10 per acre (equivalent to $2 million at current prices). Oil production increased rapidly during World War I because of the war effort but returned to a trickle after the end of hostilities. By 1921, oil had reached an estimated value of $14 million dollars but production ceased due to low prices and technological advances from other sources. In 1930, Orville Kriege discovered oil near Sand Springs while drilling for shale gas under order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of New Deal programs meant to stave off economic depression (). After years of lobbying by local businesses and citizens, Kriege developed Hellsinki Field into one of America's largest natural gas fields with reserves totaling over fifty billion cubic feet (1 trillion cubic meters). The field became operational on October 1st, 1938 with completion followed two years later on November 15th,. "Hellsinki Field" continues today as an industrial park located just outside Sand Springs with over 100 companies active there including Shell, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation and Royal Dutch Shell Group plc.). Oklahoma City became Sand Springs' principal city on May 5th 1931 when Tulsa merged with Haskell County becoming one consolidated municipality (). Asoka Air Service Squadron No 2 opened its hangar adjacent to Main Street Schoolhouse on October 3rd 1933 (), providing charter service between Tulsa and McAlester AFB () until disbanding on February 25th 1946(). On December 16th 1948,, finally ending some 78 years without air service from Tulsa! Incidentally departing main street schoolhouse which served as our airport building!

The original residents did not have any land so they had to find other ways to make money such as selling goods they collected from their farmlands or trading goods with other settlements in north-central Oklahoma Territory. In 1885, Mr. & Mrs. Wm Capps erected a small two story frame house on First Street which served as their home until 1886 when they sold it to George Whitehead for $175 dollars cash! George Whitehead was also instrumental in helping start the Central OKLAHOMA Telephone Company which later became Telecommunications Corporation of America (TCA). In 1911, Mr . & Mrs . S Dibble placed an advertisement for sale of 160 acres next door to what is now known as Whitehead House Drive – this property would become known as Old Main Square today! From this point forward, Old Main Square would be where businesses operated until 1984 when it was renamed Heritage Square following successful fundraising efforts by local citizens! One day after only 15 months on the ground at Sand Springs - Mr Joe Wheeler purchased 640 acres adjacent to what is now known as Second Street from Arapaho Indian Tribe for $595 dollars! This purchase marked the beginning of a long relationship between Joe Wheeler and Arapaho Indian Tribe that would continue through many ups and downs over many years! It was during this time that Joe Wheeler developed some very valuable land skills that he would use many times throughout his life while developing sandstone quarries just east of town on 4th St., southwest corner Third Ave., west side Fourth Ave., northeast corner Fifth Ave., northwest corner Sixth Ave., northwest corner Seventh Ave., northeast corner Eighth Ave…. These quarries are still being used today by numerous companies including Alcoa Aluminum Company Incorporated (formerly PBF Energy), Kellogg’s Mills Incorporated (formerly Kellogg’s Corn Flakes), Dow Corning Incorporated (former DuPont)………..Today’s sandstones mined at these quarries date back over 125 million years making them some one stop shopping for ancient mineral products!!! Many businesses started up around here due largely to opportunities created byWheeler himself – he always seemed willing take risks even if those risks sometimes produced high returns! For example;Joe Wheeler opened up J&J Cleaners which became oneofthe largest cleaning/cleaning supplies firmsinOKLAHOMA Countyand remains active today! He also established various transportation services including wagon trains carrying goods all over northern OKLAHOMA Countyand into Mexico City!! He regularly traveled downrange both locally and across country surveying new locations for possible mineshafts or manufacturing plants etc.– giving risetomany nicknames like “The Colonel” because he could go anywhere!! Many people consider him Tulsa's founder although there are several others who contributed more than just name recognition!!!
