Sand Springs, Oklahoma is a small town located in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stephens County. Sand Springs is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Sand Springs were Cherokee and Arapaho who founded a trading post there in 1837. In 1881, Stephens County was organized from parts of Muskogee and Mayes Counties and named for General James Stephens, hero of the Indian Wars. The city of Sand Springs was platted in 1889 by J.P. O'Neill, founder and first mayor of Tulsa proper. The city grew rapidly after it became an important transportation hub on the Gadsden-Tulsa stagecoach route connecting Tulsa with Wichita Falls, Texas, Kansas City, Missouri, Nashville, Tennessee, and points east overland via sand Horses and wagon trains driving over open country roads during the early 1900s
