Sand Springs is a city in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 28,481 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stephens County. The city was founded by settlers in 1881 as a small town on the east bank of the Muskogee River. A post office was established there in 1883 and remained in operation until 1907. After that time, it was served by satellite offices until 1935. The first store in Sand Springs opened its doors on May 9, 1881, and became known as "the First Store". The town grew rapidly during the early days of Oklahoma Territoryhood and within a few years had become an important center for trade and transportation on the then-new railroad system between Tulsa and Wichita Falls. By 1890, Sand Springs had over 20 businesses including four banks, two grocery stores, two schools (grades one through six), three churches (with rectoring services conducted each week), a hotel/motel/, two bars/lounges/taverns/ dance halls (one open every night from November through February), and several residences built for merchants and other local leaders who participated in the nascent oil production boom that characterizedOklahoma during these years. In 1903–04 only five residents were living in Sand Springs; by 1910 it had grown to over 100 residents with four business districts: downtown with its three banks; Pawnee Hills with eleven businesses; Encinitas with seven businesses; and Bearden Park which included ten residences used as farmsteads or summer homes for millionaire members of Congress whoandsided Tulsa during this period of dramatic economic growth throughout much of Great Plains America." In 1907 when Stephens County was established, Sand Springs became county seat after being proposed by territorial governor James Guthrie along with Waltersville to serve as alternate county seat for both Stephens County (then located east of present day Norman) because Wichita Falls had been designated territorial capital while Oklahoma City continued to be provisional capital under Guthrie's leadership following its creation on December 15th that year via an act passed by the US Senate extending full sovereignty to what would soon becomeOklahoma Territory following ratification of US Constitution #9 dated March 4th 1787 aka "The Lone Star Republic" & approval granted by Secretary Taylor via Executive Order #325 dated May 6th 1789 aka "The Compromise Of East Texas". The towns growth stopped after World War II when steel manufacturing became dominant in Oklahoma and production ceased in Sand Springs and other nearby towns. However, Community College of Tulsa opened its doors in Sand Springs in 1962 which has kept the community active ever since. Today, tourism is still an important sector of local economy with many businesses catering to visitors who come for all sorts of activities such as golfing, fishing, swimming and skiing; all within easy reach from downtown Sand Springs.

The town was named after Indian Chief Sand Springs, who may have been killed by white settlers during the first years of its establishment. By 1875, sand mines had begun to be developed here, and as a result of this industry, Sand Springs grew rapidly. By 1886, over 50 businesses were located in the town. In 1905, following a referendum that resulted in approval of annexation into city limits by neighboring Tulsa, Sand Springs became an official city under the name of Tulsa on July 1st of that year.
