The National Rifle Association (NRA) purchased the rights to produce its own issue of a magazine called “The Gunsmith” back in 1903. Sand Springs is a small town in Comanche County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2000 census. It lies in the Sand Springs–Ardmore Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Sand Springs was J.B. Sayers who came overland from Colorado in 1881. A post office called "Sand Spring" was established in 1885, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1902, the town of Sand Springs was organized from part of the village of Ardmore by a vote of its citizens. The name "Sand Springs" comes from thesandstone that covers much of the area and which makes for good mortar for building purposes. A cotton gin operated at present-day Smithsboro between 1903 and 1906; it may have been founded by John Smith or his son-in-law Wm Hays (1858-1937). At one time there were three sawmills operating within five miles (eight km) of where Sand Springs now stands: two around 1800 and one built about 1900 by James Robb (1795-1875). A flour mill was built on Neches River near what is now downtown after 1901 by George Cote (1847-1925), but it failed to take off and ceased operations around 1910; as a result, Cote donated land to make way for the new sand hills that make up most of downtown today. In 1909, an oil well was drilled northeast of town on private property belonging to James Ritchie; production began soon afterward on an Produce Company pipeline extending eastward from Tulsa to sell gasoline and other products at various points along its route through Sand Springs before reaching Wichita Falls, Texas near Dallas; this distribution network continued until 1934 when it became part ofthe Pan American Petroleum Corporation's Gulf Coast Pipeline System.. By 1917 all three mills had closed down; however, due to high demand for agricultural goods during World War I only one mill reopened - this being the later Haskell Oil Mill which still operates today.. A fourth mill - called The Shamrock - also operated briefly during World War I but went outof business shortly afterwards as did several othersPrior to 1939 there were no Post Offices inside or outside city limits--the only communication possible with outlying communities consistedof horseback riding trips made each springtime across Neches River into neighboring townsDowntown businesses opened up gradually during prohibition years beginning 1919 when local pharmacists became available to offer limited variety licensed goods while bars & restaurants developed specifically catering toward prohibition audiences...The first bank west of downtown opened October 12th1920--this being J F McCloy & Co.--later renamed First National Bank Of Oklahoma City . As American forces fought across Europe and Asia, they needed powerful ammo to survive enemy fire. Sand Springs was founded in 1907 by John and Lillie Holmes. The town was named for the sandstone that lay beneath the city. TheHolmes family operated a sawmill and grist mill in the town until 1914. In 1916, Sand Springs became a county seat after being selected as the site for an upcoming courthouse. The first courthouse in Sand Springs was built of logs and used to house courtrooms and other government buildings until it burned down in 1951. The county seat moved to Yukon in 1959, but returned to Sand Springs in 1961 when the population increased so much that a new courthouse was needed. As part of its history, Sand Springs has been home to several rodeos, concerts, agricultural fairs, and other events.
The city of Sand Springs, Oklahoma was named after General James K. Polk in 1885. The city's first post office was established in 1887. In 1907, the town of Sand Springs became a full-time municipality and its own government was established. The first mayor of the new municipality was Wm. Ladd Johnstone. In 1916, the City Council authorized the construction of a waterworks to provide drinking water for the community. The sandstone quarries that dominate downtown today were also used to build this structure.
