The first European to visit Sand Springs was Jedediah Smith in 1829, when he and his party were explorationin what is now Oklahoma. The name "Sand Springs" likely originated with this location because it was one of several places where water could be found deep enough to make a millstream from. In 1868, Colonel John Fetterman built Fort Riley here after occupying present day Wichita Falls in Texas Territory. The town residents named their community for him, as they had seen him driving by on horseback with General Sam Houston near Independence Rock (now Parkdale). In 1907, the Assemblies of God church opened its doors in Sand Springs and quickly became one of the most important Protestant denominations in the area. That same year also saw construction begin on what would eventually become Tulsa's first high school; Redeemer High School was built on land donated by Jeptha Blythe and later renamed for his wife Nellie Blythe Pritchett-Bigham. In 1912, Sand Springs became an official city and upgraded its infrastructure including sewerage, public parks and fire halls. A new courthouse replaced the original buildings constructed during World War II as part of Project Tiger: a $15 million effort to improve infrastructure throughout Tulsa County that included building over 1,000 new homes. During prohibition years in 1918-1920, many men working at local breweries went out under general warrants to purchase liquor while employed by their employers - this led to nickname "Drunken Indians". As such, much Prohibition memorabilia still remains around town today including items such as bottles from some local breweries run by friends or family members during these years while supplies last! Founded as a mercantile center around 1830 by traders from Missouri City (now Fort Worth), this center slowly transitioned into what is now known as agriculture until becoming an important transportation hub during World War II when preparations began for landing combat troops at Naval Station Keokuk in central Iowa along the Arkansas River In 1946, Sand Springs become home to America's first large commercial airport when Okmulgee Municipal Airport opened just east of town on private land donated by rancher Wiley Eisner after his purchase of 4,500 acres (1 km2) south of town nearpresent-day Catoosa Lake As more businesses arrived in town over time and demand grew for space within limits set by then-Mayor Floyd Davenport – who had helped found Okmulgee Municipal Airport – plans were made to expand OMA into what would eventually become today's Downtown Sand Springs with two parallel streets running North/South providing ample room for future growth On July 17th, 1964, due to concerns about potential flooding from nearby Pine Creek which had swollen since early June due to heavy rains following severe thunderstorms that season - Mayor Davenport announced that portions of Downtownsand springs would be abandoned due to both damage done while under construction associated with prior paving projects plus concern about water levels rising above ground levels needed for expansion - all buildings north of First Street including State Capitol Annex were razed including much older garages used by City Hall as well as several other structures dating back to 1881 while remaining standing except those destroyed or damaged beyond restoration such as Administration Building which housed City Manager’s Office This action effectively ended downtown sandsprings status quo ante nuclei status quo before any further growth could occur without approval from thenCity Manager Floyd Davenport who also directed demolition project directors at closing all doors & windows inside Administration Building ensuring complete privacy among citizens until later design & engineering work could begin which included installation new roofs & siding completing project cost $2700 per building outlay . This action also served notice that if similar actions are not taken soon significant changes will need to be made regarding zoning rules governing future waterfront redevelopment . Today many original 1895 building still remain derelict or boarded up but offer telltale signs [such as missing gables] that once againsandSprings may soon experience significant revitalization given current market conditions
