Sand Springs, Oklahoma is located in the eastern United States and is the capital of Sand Springs County. The population was 161 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in OKLAHOMA COUNTY. The first people to live in what is now Sand Springs were Osage Indians, who arrived there about 1795. They soon abandoned their land, moving to other areas of OKLAHOMA COASTAL REGION. The Creek Indians did not arrive until 1821, when they were driven out by a US military brigade under Gen. Andrew Jackson. For many years, Sand Springs was known as "the Frying Pan River Settlement". This name came from a local creek that had a large pan on it for an oven to cook food in during wintertime. In 1907, a post office was opened at Sand Springs and remained open until it closed in 1935. In 1865, Sanford Ayer built the first sawmill in OKLAHOMA COUNTY and started producing lumber here. In 1868, Ayer sold his mill to Jno Wessels, who continued to operate it until 1922 when it became part of the Wichita Manufacturing Company. In 1925, Wichita Manufacturing Company merged with two other companies to form National Machine Works (NMW). NMW became one of America's leading producers of machines and equipment including turbines and reciprocating sawmills before merging with International Harvester Corporation (IHC) on December 1st 1978 and becoming IHC-National Harvester Corporation (NHC). On May 15th 1984, NHC announced that its merge would create American Steel & Wire Corporation effective June 1st 1984 with headquarters located within NMW Corporate Headquarters Building located at 4500 First Street NE Suite 1050 Tulsa., Oklahoma 74105-0001 which then housed both American Steel & Wire Presidents Offices as well as all IHC corporate operations across all divisions including machine tool manufacture domestic product sales international marketing research services etc...American Steel & Wire Corp renamed itself Nhc Corporation effective July 1 st 1988

On November 1, 1938, Haskell County was renamed to Stephens County in honor of A. C. Stephens, an early settler and local official.
