Unfortunately, only three rounds per hour were available at this inaugural range which made it difficult for people to shoot sportsman’s targets or compete against each other for bragging rights. In 1903, the National Shooting Association (NSA) acquired land east of town and hired Prentice Blackett as its first superintendent of ranges and Instructional Building. This saw Gunsmoke Hill Range become one of America’s leading shooting ranges, hosting top firearms experts from all over the country each season. By 1911, Gunsmoke Hill Range had telescopes installed inside both buildings to allow shooters to see directly into their barrels while firing without any obstruction. In 1916, an addition was added to the building that housed a large shotguns range that could accommodate up to 12 guns at once! In 1948, Gunsmoke Hill Range merged with Compaweld Arms Corporation and became part of Compaweld-National Firearms Manufacturing Company Incorporated (CNWM). During this time period CNWM expanded their facility across four floors and added five more classrooms including a sniper training academy that allowed students from all over the United States access to high quality firearms training! Despite having been rejected by Mayor Mick Cornett three times since 2003 (the last time being during his term as mayor), councilwoman Kathy Valentine has continued trying to get annexation approved despite some negative community reactions online and on social media related to her efforts – including several death threats made against her personal safety subsequent to her attempts).
