Under this plan, which called for heavy industry and large housing developments throughout central and eastern Oklahoma City areas near Interstate 15 – including parts of Tulsa – sandmining operations were established in what is now northwestern Sand Springs. The development was financed by Oklahoman financiers and led to an increase in job opportunities for residents while also creating new businesses and residences around the sandmining sites. But it wasn't all good news for Sand Springs: many local farmers were forced out of their homes as production increased along with traffic on I-15; furthermore, dust created during mining operations caused respiratory problems for some locals that continue today. Nevertheless, Aiken's proposal generated widespread approval among Oklahomans and helped create a strong sense of communityhood among those living near mining sites in northeastern Oklahoma City .
