Sand Springs, Oklahoma was founded in 1881 by Augustus D. Wright and his wife, Eliza C. Wright. The town was named for the sandstone quarries that were located nearby. The Wrights began a cotton gin and mill in the town in 1881, and soon other businesses followed suit. In 1907, Sand Springs became a city with its own government. Sand Springs experienced growth during World War II as the military base it was called Project Navajo. More than 20,000 people were employed at the base during the war, making it one of largest employers in OKC at that time. After the war ended, Sand Springs slowly declined until the early 21st century when it regained some of its former business prosperity thanks to population growth and new development around it. Today, Sand Springs is home to a number of cultural attractions including an art museum, a football stadium/parking lot/ Recreational Fieldhouse complex, several restaurants and bars (including one owned by Facebook), as well as a variety of shops and businesses providing services to residents and visitors alike.
Sand Springs was founded in 1868 by John A. Stephenson and a band of settlers. The area had been pounded by the great buffalo herds that once roamed the area, so early residents developed a dependable trade with these animals. They also began to explore new territory, which included what is now Oklahoma City. In 1870, Stephenson founded a post office in Sand Springs and named it after himself. The town continued to grow as businesses opened up and people came to live hereabouts. By 1907, Sand Springs had become one of the largest cities in Oklahoma Territory. It prospered because of its access to water supplies and itslocation on the Republican River.
