Sand Springs is a city in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 11,554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Payne County. The area that now makes up Sand Springs was first inhabited by the Osage people. When white settlers arrived in 1867, they named the town for General Zachary Taylor because he had saved their people from being scalped by Indians during the Indian Wars. The first post office in Sand Springs was established in 1871. The town grew rapidly and developed into an important agricultural center during the 19th century. One of its main crops were cotton and corn; other products include oilseed rape, hay, hogs and cattle. In 1906, a new water system was installed to provide drinking water for all of Payne County with a pipeline leading to Tulsa. During World War II, Sand Springs became one of the largest aluminum producing towns in America due to its location on Antelope River near Tulsa and abundance of bauxite deposits nearby. After the war ended, many factories closed but some continued operation until they went out of business around 1980-1990. The last factory closed down in 2000 when Alcoa announced it would move its operations to Mexico City as part of their restructuring plan which also included closures throughout much of eastern Oklahoma including Sand Springs In recent years there has been renewed interest in revitalizing downtown areas such as Pryor Square which includes resurrecting an old bank building and restoring several other buildings . There are also plans to build a new library block adjacent to Pryor Square as well as developing several small businesses downtown that could reopen if done properly

Sand Springs, Oklahoma is a small town located in Perkins County, Oklahoma. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1907 by Methodist missionaries from Chicago. The original name of the town was Indianola. In 1907, the post office was called Indianola and it changed to Sand Springs in 1910. The first store opened in 1912 and the first school was built in 1915. In 1941, World War II began and because of that, the town lost its status as a center for industry and commerce due to lack of wartime production jobs. However, some businesses did reopen after the war including a restaurant called Pearly Gates which reopened in 1948 and still operates today as a business entity known as The Gates Restaurant Group LLC. Since 1975, whenOklahoma became an independent state, Sand Springs has been governed by both Republican Party rule and Democratic Party rule with one exception: from 1999-2001 when then-Governor Don Leach appointed Jane Beckman to serve out his unexpired term until he could be replaced by another Republican governor due to term limits set in place at that time; until 2007 when then-Governor Mary Fallin replaced Beckman with fellow Democrat Craig Silverstein effective January 1st 2007 pursuant to an executive order signed by Fallin during her second term as Governor following her re-election campaign victory over incumbent Tom Vilsack on November 3rd 2006 thus ending partisan control over government at Sand Springs City Hall for six years courtesy of the now all three major political parties having equal representation within city hall--an unheardof event ever occurring within any American city or county government before or since November 3d 2006!
Sand Springs, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by Commissioned Officer James H. Payne and his wife, Lillie Mae. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Kansas- Texas state line and the new oilfields discovered along the border of those two states. In 1912, Payne donated land to the city for a public square, which became known as "Paynes Square." The town's first mayor was W.H. McKay, who served from 1912 until 1916. During that time, Sand Springs hosted the world's first international exposition; the Paris World Exposition of 1915. It also saw construction of several large businesses including American Tobacco Company and Armour & Co., both of which remain in operation today. In 1917, Payne died at age 80 years old and is buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Sand Springs. Lillie Mae Payne continued to live in Sand Springs until her death in 1951; she is also buried there.
