By 1950, Sand Springs had reached its peak population of 200,000 people and continued to grow steadily through the 1960s and 1970s. However, growth began to slowdown in the 1980s and 1990s as a result of several factors including recessionary conditions, increased competition from other towns in the area, and changes in local government which led to more consolidation within the community. In 2001, Sand Springs merged with neighboring city of Grove City to form one large city with a total population of over 150,000 people.
Sand Springs is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Sand Springs" was given to the town by General James H. Wilson because he found sand near the mouth of Muscogee Creek and thought it resembled springs in France. The first post office in Sand Springs was established on December 15, 1906. The present Post Office Building was built in 1927 and has been used as a courthouse since 1951. A grocery store and gas station were originally located here but they have been demolished or replaced by newer structures over time. Some of the earliest settlers in Sand Springs were John Tilton and his family from Massachusetts who arrived around 1885; George Weems from Tennessee who settled in 1890; Daniel Hawkins from Virginia who arrived about 1895; Hiram Sallis from Ohio who settled about 1898; Fenton Culp from Kentucky who arrived about 1902; Denny Pritchett from New York City who arrive about 1909; Willis O'Brien from Ireland who came about 1911 In 1917, two brothers named Edward Jurek and John Jurek moved into Sand Springs from Illinois with their families after purchasing an acreage east of town where they would build what would become known as "The Park". They had no landowning privilege so they leased their holdings back to local farmers for 10 years which provided them with enough money to purchase more land when the lease expired. After Several years of growth through annexation by other towns within Stephens County (most notably Bristow), Sand Springs became its own municipality on November 3rd, 1934 via an act of state legislature granted by Governor Henry Biddle Jones Jr.. As a result of this incorporation process, all civil government functions including city hall were transferred to newly created Mayor/Clerk-at-Large George Weems with responsibility for all municipal services including streetcars and fire suppression until 1984 when that RESPONSIBILITY WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY MANAGER/CITY CLERK THROUGH AN ACT OF LEGISLATURE ON MAY 14TH 1984 . Despite having many new ordinances put into effect during his term as Mayor/Clerk-at-Large including complete reestablishment of streetcars following a year long restoration project spearheaded by then City Manager Donnie Kapp (who also served as interim mayor during this time) Councilmember Stan Schaefer declared early 2005 that he did not believe there could be another councilman elected to serve out the remainder of Mayor Weems' unexpired term due to health concerns

Sand Springs is a city in McIntosh County, Oklahoma, United States. It was founded in 1907 by the merger of two settlements, Midtown and Sand Springs. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Sand Springs was J.B. White and his family who arrived from Illinois on July 4, 1907. They started a hardware store and trading post which served as the center of town for many years. In 1916 the town charter was amended to allow for a school district and an election to fill any one of four positions on the city council; these seats were not filled until 1941 when Cyrus Davenport became mayor after serving as alderman since 1924. In 1927 then-mayor John Fritchey approved construction of what would become the first municipal building; it stood at Third Street and Elm Avenue until 1971 when it was moved to its current location at First Avenue and North Main Street. The first high school graduate in Sand Springs graduated from Indianola High School in 1918 with Class of 1920 alumna Jane Wharton as her teacher mentor! It wasn't until 1959 that Oklahoma Statehood granted McAlester University status which led to immediate development east of First Avenue including new housing developments north of I-40 including Fairmont Place and Pershing Place across from McAlester Coliseum where Cowboys football games were played before moving them east several times during their history including 1974 when they playedat AT&T Stadium in Arlington Texas before finally settling down at Cowboys Stadium beginning play there on September 16th 1995 . The stadium has been home to both the Cowboys (now known as NFL teams) and Tulsa Oilers (AFL team) since its opening day
The town of Sand Springs was founded in 1881 by J.F. Haskell, a landowner and politician who served as the first mayor. The town sprang up around a military fort that was established in 1867 to provide security for the area during the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The fort was abandoned in 1870 and most of the surrounding land was sold to settlers in 1881. The Fort Haskell Museum is located within the boundaries of today's Sand Springs.
