Today's downtown also contains several museums including the McAlester Arts District Museum of Art which features local art from around Muskogee County; City Hall Annex which houses city government offices; and numerous small businesses such as restaurants and shops that have thrived over the years despite challenges posed by urban sprawl or lack of available land near shopping centers or schools.

The post was called Fort Choctaw, and it served as a trading center for the nearby Osage Nation. By 1920, Tulsa had become one of America's leading cities. During World War II, Tulsa played an important role in the war effort by providing munitions and other goods to various allies.
