The arsenal closed its doors in 1970 but remained standing until it was demolished in 1984. Since then, ammunition has not been an important part of life in Sand Springs. However, some residents continue to preserves their old munitions from this time period by storing them at home or yard sales. The population of Sand Springs peaked at 15,000 in 1910 but declined to 9,500 by 1920. The city's heyday came during the 1940s when it had a population of over 50,000. However, the population declined again during the 1950s and 1960s due to factors such as manufacturing relocation to other states or closures of local businesses. In 1997, Sand Springs became part of Oklahoma City metropolitan area and experienced significant growth thereafter. In 2008, the city announced it would be closing its doors for good on December 31st due to budget cuts.
