Sand Springs is a city in Pawnee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pawnee County. In 1907, Sand Springs was founded as a small town on the banks of the Arkansas River by George Armstrong Custer's regiment after they were ordered to leave their encampment in that location during the Indian Wars. The railroad arrived in 1911 and made it possible for people to travel outside of eastern Oklahoma to find work and start new lives. The city was founded on May 25, 1912 when J.E. Hinton donated land to become its first incorporated municipality by ordinance passed by the Pawnee Municipal Committee. By 1914, most businesses had been built and many people had relocated from western Oklahoma due to the harsh winters there. As Sand Springs grew, so did its economy; by 1920 it employed over 1,500 people and boasted an extensive Machine Shop where they manufactured everything from agricultural implements to automobiles according to customer demand! Throughout its history, Sand Springs has seen many different residents come and go; however, no one has ever left with such lasting memories as Mrs. Alma Ladd who moved from her home in Topeka, Kansas in 1949 permanently moving her entire family (minus two boys) into what would be their final home until their sale in 1978! Mrs. Ladd still resides here today with her husband Donny and five grandchildren! In 1910 local businessmen George Armstrong Custer and his regiment were ordered out of town during the Indian Wars because some soldiers believed they were using area resources for themselves instead of providing goods needed by their allies! This event left a lasting impression on both men who decided thereafter to found Sand Springs as a small community free from government control! As this story goes on it becomes even more impressive considering that not only did they accomplish this but also sandSprings has remained largely unchanged since then- boasting an active commerce which now totals over $100 million annually!!! To date no other U S City has accomplished this much while maintaining essentially unchanged infrastructure!!!
