Ponca City, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by the Chisholm Trail Expedition. The city is named after Ponca Chief Porcupine who helped lead the expedition. The city's first post office opened in 1909. In 1912, the Oklahoma legislature designated Ponca City as a town and it became a part of Tulsa County. In 1921, Ponca City annexed the towns of Bellefontaine and Harper to its boundaries. In 1924, both Bellefontaine and Harper were again annexed to Ponca City when their populations reached 25,000 residents each. As a result of these annexations, Ponca City became one of the most populous cities in Tulsa County. In 1957, the population of Ponca City exceeded 50,000 people for the first time ever and it remained that way until 1973 when it decreased to 47,500 people due to an influx of new residents from other counties in Tulsa County. However, during this time period there were also some major changes taking place in Ponca City including the opening of two shopping malls which increased traffic into and around the city center; construction of a new high school; and development along State Highway 168 which created more jobs opportunities for local businesses. In recent years there has been an increase in development within Zip Code 83601 within downtown Ponka Village which has led to increased traffic congestion on streets surrounding downtown Ponka Village as well as on state highways running through town center such as US-60/Highway 169 (and concurrent I-35), making it difficult for pedestrians or bicyclists to move about town without getting lost or stuck behind cars traveling at high rates of speed. This problem was compounded by recent changes made to primary highway routes within town center including expansion of I-35 northward from downtown onto Main Street creating more direct access from Interstate 35W into town center while also adding another 95th Avenue interchange providing access from I-235 eastward into town center - all significant developments that have not yet had any impact on traffic congestion outside downtown Konawa Village where street parking is limited and alternatives for transportation are few and far between
Ponca City was founded in 1907 by a group of American Indians led by Chief Tecumseh Sherman. The city's name comes from the Ponca word "poncha," meaning "water" or "stream." The first inhabitants of Ponca City were the Kiowa and Cheyenne, who lived near the present-day town of Coalgate. In 1907, General George Custer and his cavalry unit were traveling through Oklahoma when they came across the village. When he saw how well established it was, Custer ordered his men to stop and visit Ponca City. The town grew quickly because of its location along a watercourse and itseasy access to goods and transportation. As Ponca City became more important in Indian society, other groups began to settle in the city as well: traders from Texas, miners from Colorado, and entrepreneurs from all over the United States. By 1920, Poncha City had become one of the largest cities in Oklahoma.
