In 1892, a group of men and women decided to form a cooperative to produce and sell eyeglasses. They named their company "The American Elegance Company." The first glasses were made from natural materials such as bamboo and wood. By 1915, the company had developed a new type of lens that allowed for better vision. In 1949, The American Elegance Company merged with another Eyeglass Manufacturer, The Kapp Company. This merger created the largest eyeglass manufacturer in the world at that time. From 1949-1957, The Kapp Company was headquartered in Ponca City while American Eagle Products was headquartered in Tulsa. After The Kapp Company left town, American Eagle Products became an independent company again until 1980 when it merged with Allied Optical Industries to become Associated Optical Industries Incorporated (AOI).
Ponca City, Oklahoma is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma and the county seat of Haskell County. The population was 30,883 at the 2010 census, making Ponca City thelargest city in Haskell County by population. The first post office for Ponca City was established on December 15, 1881. It became an official city on July 1, 1907. In 1927, the high school moved to its present location on Eastern Avenue Northeast and began offering college level classes (now known as Tulsa Community College). A fire destroyed most of the original downtown business district in 1978 but due to generous donations from local residents and businesses restored much of that district including many old buildings including the Main Post Office next door which reopened in 1981 after being closed for over 50 years! Ponca City was founded in 1907 by the Ponca Indians. The city is located in south-central Oklahoma, on the confluence of the Arkansas River and the Canadian River. The area that became Ponca City was part of present-day Wichita County when it was established in 1872. In 1907, the Kansas Territorial Legislature created a new county called Cherokee County, which included most of what is now Ponca City. The name Cherokee County derived from Choctaw, who had lived in that region for many years. The first permanent settlers in Ponca City were men from Wichita County who came to live near the mouth of the Canadian River in 1907. These early pioneers were primarily farmers and ranchers, but they soon developed an industry that supported their families: mining coal and other minerals near the river. This activity led to increased traffic on local roads and to development of downtown Ponca City as a commercial center. In 1911,anchored by oil interests interested in developing petroleum resources across Oklahoma Territory, Democrats set out to win control of Indian Affairs within Indian Country through elections at all levels. Their efforts paid off; within two years, Democratic politicians had obtained passage of legislation creating Oklahoma’s first white school district – District 12 – outside of Tulsa (then still part of Mexico). In 1916, Republicans took control of Indian Affairs under President Woodrow Wilson’s patronage system; this period saw rapid growth for Poncas City as businesses opened up throughout Indian Country seeking opportunities to sell goods sold only within their own communities or within tribal lands. As American society changed during this time period, so too did Poncas City – its economy grew rapidly thanks both to growing population density and rising profits from its industrial assets.) During these years, also characterized by social unrestrained by political correctness or formal government regulation (a time often characterized as “the Wild West”), young people from all over Indian Country gathered together at various events organized by party operatives like Will Rogers (soon elected mayor) or Pee Wee Reese (elected sheriff). At these gatherings young people shared ideas about how they wanted their future conducted; what they believed was needed to build a better tomorrow for themselves and their families; how they envisioned themselves contributing to society as a whole…all while under attack from traditionalists like James Grant Whitehead who argued that economic progress should come only through policies designed specifically towards Native Americans rather than those benefiting White European interests more generally. After serving two terms as mayor (1924–27) and one term (1929–31) before being elected chairman of the Republican National Committee (1935–39), Rogers left his post after disagreements with party leadership over immigration policy resulted in his removal from officefeeder state into Dixiecrat territory along with other prominent Republicans such as George Norris.* In 1939 he founded Hearst Corporation*, which would become oneof America's largest newspapers* during World War II*.
