In the early 1800s, Ponca City was a small outpost in what is now Oklahoma. continual settlement and growth led to new settlements being established in the area, and Ponca City became an important trading center. The first holster company to be established in Ponca City was J.H. Greener & Sons Armory in 1858. holster manufacture continued to grow throughout the 19th century, with companies such as Drexel & Company, Colt & Company, and Smith & Wesson establishing plants within the city limits. During World War II, Ponca City was home to a number of military installations including Fort Sill and Manuel Antonio Air Force Base. By the late 1940s, holster manufacture had largely been abandoned in Ponca City, but there were still a few companies that operated out of town until the early 1990s when several local businesses merged to form H&K Gunworks Incorporated. H&K has since become one of Oklahoma's leading handgun manufacturers.

Ponca City is located on the north bank of the Arkansas River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Tulsa and about 20 miles (32 km) west of Muskogee. The first permanent settler in what would become Ponca City was James Armstrong in 1867. Prior to this, some Native Americans had lived there for centuries. The land that Ponca City stands upon was part of Cherokee Nation until 1907 when it became part of the United States as a result of the Indian Removal Act. At that time, over 400,000 Native Americans were forcibly removed from their homes and villages across America – including most of those living in Oklahoma – and placed into slave labor on newly created farms outside eastern Kansas and western Texas. Many Cherokees were forced to leave their homes altogether and were never able to return home again; however, many managed to find new lives in various parts of America before finally dying out completely or being absorbed into other cultures once they arrived here in America. In 1907, an act by President Theodore Roosevelt called for land grants to be made available to settlers near Muskogee Creek in Eastern Oklahoma Territory – much like what would happen later with reservations surrounding Tulsa proper. Because so many people wanted to move closer to civilization due to increased access to education and transportation opportunities thanks largely to railroad construction activities around Tulsa’s periphery, Pisgah National Forest was designated as a primary area for settlement along Arkansas River bluffs just east of present day Ponca City limits on February 12th 1908 by then-Governor Edwin James Guthrie under authority granted by Congress via Executive Order No.: 10758 dated December 7th 1907 which contains provisions relative thereto: “It shall be hereby ordered that all lands lying within 1/2 mile [1 km]of said creek and its tributaries may be taken up for Federal purposes….” This order authorized members from local ranchers associations who had gathered nearMuskogee Ferry Road on August 5th 1906 pursuant thereto (and continued gathering thereafter) including future Mayor John Ahern (a native son who would later serve as Mayor from 2007-2013), Probst & Burkhardt “Jimmie” Hargrave & Brothers tailors shop owners Hiram Beasley & Fenton Beasley brothers Jno., Wm., Chas., Saml., Geo.. Thereabouts platted lots at 711 N First St NE which measured 3 acres + right-of-way….. After reaching an agreement with several meatpacking companies interested therein adjacent thereto then surveyed Lots Nos 22 thru 26 inclusive… Subsequently named Pryor Ranch after Major General Ulysses S Grant whose 16th Infantry Regiment patrolled said creek during World War II while also stationed at McAlester Barracks taking care thereof; thence parcel 6 south 4 chains long containing more than 640 acres sold Separate lot 25 now known as Pryor Block 508 North Main Street
