In 1938, Mayor Prentice Hadden unsuccessfully ran for re-election on a platform opposing annexation into Tulsa County due to concerns about environmental damage from industry in Tulsa proper while growth in nearby Jefferson County would lead to increased traffic congestion within town limits. After World War II ended, many businesses closed down due to inflationary pressures which caused economic stagnation throughout most of the 1950s and 1960s; however some revived during this time including a successful campaign led by mayor John McClendon for protection against desalination plant relocation plans developed outside town boundaries (he won). With growing populations elsewhere along Oklahoma’s borderlands during this period there was less need for such amenities as a city police department since law enforcement functions were handled by other agencies within Tulsa or neighboring counties; however civic services continue to be provided through special events/ festivals organized around town annually (e.g., Oktoberfest).
