Gun magazines have a long and varied history in Ponca City, Oklahoma. The first magazine published in the city was the "Ponca Republican", which was published from 1892 to 1898. After that, there were a few publications between 1899 and 1903 before the first gun store opened in 1907. From 1907 until 1934, the "Ponca Democrat" was printed continuously, until it was replaced by the current publication, the "Ponca City Chronicle". The first gun show in Ponca City took place on October 12th, 1911. It was organized by Wm. Kline of Topeka and featured shotguns, handguns and rifle cartridges from all over America. The show continued every year until 1915 when it moved to Wichita Falls due to World War I shortages of weapons in Ponca City. In 1916, the town council voted to buy two rifles for use at local fairs but they never happened because World War I ended before they could be acquired. In 1934, after four years of being published as a monthly magazine with an editor-in-chief position elected by voting members of the editorial board (who also decided topics for each issue), "The News-Democrat" became an official daily newspaper with its own editorial staff and publishing schedule!
