Ponca City, Oklahoma is a city in the midwestern United States. It was founded in 1907 by the Ponca tribe of Native Americans. The population was 24,023 at the 2010 census. The Ponca City School District covers all of Ponca City and its surrounds. The city is located on the east side of what is now Tulsa County on U.S-40 between Jenks to the north and McAlester to the south-west. The area that Ponca City now occupies was first settled by Choctaw people about 12,000 years ago according to archeology recovered from nearby archaeological sites dating back to earlier Paleo-Indian cultures such as those at Fort Gibson State Park which are thought to be even older than this area currently occupied by Choctaw people The first permanent white settlers arrived around 1825 when James Fenton established himself as a trader with trading posts upriver from present day Tulsa on what is now known as Fenton's Landing Road (). He soon began buying land along this route from native chiefs for parcels totaling some . What became known as "Fentontown" developed near where he built his trading post (). Settlers here included John Cundiff (), David Browning () and others from Kentucky who had come down river during or after Indian Removal action led by General Winfield Scott (). A group of men led by Captain James Murtaugh set out for Wichita Falls about March 5th, 1827 with just six horse[s] (the only time American forces had ever marched across Indian Territory) under their command including Captains Wm Henson(), John Ladd()and George ArmstrongCarpenter(). From Wichita Falls they rode southeast through present day Union CountyPASSING TULSA ON THE RIGHT AND KANSAS CITY ON THE LEFT.. finally reachingpresent day PONCA CITY at an elevation OF 400 FEET (122 m). Here they constructed a small fortifications consisting of earth works lining a stream course plus bastion points spaced 2 feet apart around an interior courtyard surrounded by earthen ramparts having DIN Railings supporting Proportioned Timber Walls 8x8 inches (.25 m) high; Inside were two rooms each measuring 60×60 feet (.20 x 20 m), one with chimney ascending to 506 square feet (46 sq meters), ovens & stovepipe connection leading into living room also accessed through Chimney; Windows were single pane made either 6/12 inch (15 mm) thick faced hardwood panes OR gabled leaded glass panes then finished with hard enamel paint In 1828 Captain Murtaugh’s party crossed upper Arkansas River at modern day Walnut Hills Dam crossing below what is now Tulsa but before reachingpresent day PONCA CITY They watered their horses at today’s Republican Lake prior journey upriver some miles continuing until evening when night fell &&&&&&&&&& Captain James Murtaugh's Party traveled upstream until descending below present day Walnut Hills Dam whereupon they continued traveling intermittently for several miles before halting because it was getting dark outside &&&&& They camped overnight within easy reach of Republican Lake which continues flowing westward today but then resumed its current course tomorrow morning allowing them ample time next morning boats could cross without difficulty despite high water levels !! Daybreak found them proceeding again downstream past today's Mulberry Pointe southwesterly past White Sands Summit towards future site marker Black Mesa Ruins however engine failures caused them ultimatelyto turn back early that afternoon while still very close enoughto Gadsden Creek so boats could easily enter Spanish Fork River not more than two miles away !!
