Ponca City is a small city in the east-central region of Oklahoma. The population was 7,591 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kay County. Ponca City was founded as a trading post on what is now the corner of Third and Main streets by General George Armstrong Custer and his forces during the American Civil War. The post was abandoned after Custer's victory but it reemerged as a center for trade with Native Americans until 1881 when it lost its importance to Tulsa. In 1907, Ponca City became an annex of Tulsa, but retained its own government and culture until 1959 when it seceded from Tulsa to form its own independent municipality known as Kay County. The history of Ponca City dates back to 1861, when General George Armstrong Custer led his cavalry brigade through Kay County on their way to help repulse an attack by Comanche Indians on Fort Defiance in eastern Oklahoma Territory. The town that emerged from this skirmish called Gratz had been founded by traders who traveled between Tulsa and Gratz in order to sell goods bought from Indian merchants. At first, Gratz consisted only of a few tents and huts used by traders and other travelers who stopped here for rest or sustenance while they explored new territory ahead; however, within two years there were over fifty homes built near the present site of downtown Ponca City. During World War II, local businesses such as garment manufacturers produced items including war material needed by both England and America; many individual residents also assisted in production in various ways such as working long hours at odd jobs or manufacturing parts for warplanes being built at Gratz Airport. After the war ended, business slowed down although some residents did continue working in fields such as construction throughout the postwar period; however, economic instability characterized much ofKay County during this time which contributed largely todecline in population over ensuing decades according to Census figures published every ten years beginning with 1960). Ponca City, Oklahoma is a small city located in the middle of the Oklahoma panhandle. It was founded by the Ponca people in 1881. The population of Ponca City reached 7,000 in 1907 and grew to over 30,000 by 1921. The oil boom of the 1920s and 1930s led to rapid growth in Ponca City and its suburbs, which included much of what is now Tulsa County. However, during World War II many Ponca City residents volunteered for military service and some businesses closed because they could not compete with wartime production quotas. By 1945 the city had declined to 3,500 inhabitants. However, post-World War II growth has resumed and Ponca City has since become one of the most populous cities in northeastern Oklahoma. The land that would eventually become Ponca City was first settled by Native Americans about 12 miles east of present-day Tulsa on what is now known as Fayetteville Flat Creek. In 1871 James Wetherbee purchased two thousand acres from Chief Muskogee for $8 per acre ($140 per km2). Although Wetherbee did not actually settle his land until 1875, he may have taken possession of it before that due to litigation related to a previous purchase from John Phelps Dodge & Co., another important early settler in this area. The town site at current day intersection ofeastside streets (now Main Street) and westside streets was surveyed on July 1st, 1881 by A L Ramsey Jr., surveyor for Henry Griggs & Company under contract with Drury Elliott & Brothers as part of their exploration for new lands westward along Arkansas Avenue (later US 66). Wetherbee's original town plat only called it "Poncahome". On November 7th 1886 Wetherbee sold his interest in town to J C Haggerty who became sole proprietor thereof under the name "J C Haggerty & Co". In January 1888 Haggerty changed his name to "Poncahome Oil No 5" due to anti-trust regulations at that time limiting business names that may be used together within a single company or enterprise. On May 6th 1890 PONCAHOME OIL COMPANY INCorporation was filed with Pollock Clerk’s office #1 At this time there were three oil companies operating outa Tulsa OK: J C HAGGERTY'S PONCAHOME OIL COMPANY NO 5; THE FROGGINS COAL COMPANY OFOKLAHOMA; AND THE GASOLINE ENERGY CORPORATION OF TULSA OKLAHOMA ALL UNDER ONE BUSINESS NAME - PONCA CITY OIL COOPERATIVE INCORPORATED! The Panic Of 1893 created volatility throughout western society which included an increase in oil prices from $2 per barrel up through $35 per barrel over six months - all while gold prices remained constant at $20/oz! This high price volatility caused banks throughout America tightened lending standards which impacted First National Bank (FNB) particularly hard as notes became more expensive than gold! Consequently FNB went into receivership on October 17th 1893 after being unable pay its debts plus interest accrued on late loans totaling $40,545! Many local businesses failed during this period including those owned by J C HAGGERTY who lost approximately 60% or their value! In 1898 when William Jennings Bryan ran for President against Grover Cleveland using a platform advocating free speech and free markets we can say that wide openOklahoma was experiencing its golden age! As recently as 1950 almost every business closed within five years due primarily toIncreased competition from interstate trucking operations!. After WWII agricultural production increased greatly due mainly to monsoon rains but also increased demand from global consumers!! Today there are numerous Service stations scattered around town providing gasoline services etc......... thanksgiving parade attendance total since 1978 averaging 161 residents attending each event......
Ponca City was founded by the Pawnees in 1836. It became a city in 1907 and remained so until it merged with Haskell County, Kansas, in 1932.
