Ponca City is a small town in east-central Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,730 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee County seat and the county's largest city. The first permanent settler in Ponca City was Fenton Hargrave in 1887. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer and his men who fought in the Mexican–American War on April 6, 1846. Ponca City grew rapidly during World War II as a munitions manufacturing center due to its location along the Chisholm Trail. After the war, Ponca City lost its importance as a munitions manufacturing center but has continued to grow since then as an agricultural community with a significant military presence dating back to World War I. In addition to its municipal government, Ponca City also has two school districts: one serving all of Muskogee County and another serving just portions of Muskogee County including Ponca City proper.
