In 1865-1866, Union troops under General William Taggart burned down two local ranchers' haciendas in order to collect livestock for cavalry units under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Curtis during the Prairie Schooner Raids against Native American leaders near Tulsa (now Tulsa). This incident helped spark an agricultural boom that continues to this day in Ponca City and other nearby towns across Muskogee County. In 1917, Ponca City became home to World War I Veterans Cemetery when Texas A&M University established a military cemetery east of town on US-71 south of present-day White Tower Road. As federal law required all graves within 2 miles of any university campus or main building except national cemeteries be placed within 24 hours after death, many World War I veterans had their funerals held here before they were buried at their respective universities' cemetery sites elsewhere in Muskogee County or Tulsa.
